PLEASE JOIN VOICE FOR THE ANIMALS IN A VIRTUAL FUNERAL FOR JEWEL, WHO WAS EUTHANIZED LAST THURSDAY AT THE LOS ANGELES ZOO.

On Thursday night, January 26, at 7 PM, we are asking everyone to stop for one minute in memory of Jewel.

Jewel is the 17th elephant to die at the LA Zoo. Like Jewel, the majority of the deaths were a result of severe and painful foot infections caused by the environment in which they lived.

Please send us your tribute to Jewel. Either in writing, a video, a song, a poem, a drawing or whatever you’d like. Email it to [email protected]. We will post them on social media.

Let us promise Jewel that we will do everything we can to make sure that she will be the last elephant to die at the LA Zoo.

I am a veterinarian who testified on the future of Billy at the LA Zoo on November 29, 2022, in a meeting held by former Councilmember Koretz.  I was sorry to learn of last Thursday's death of elephant Jewel at the Los Angeles Zoo.  I reported on her visual physical appearance and behavior during my first site visit in 2019 and assessment report on Billy's health and welfare in 2020 to her failing appearance in a follow up site visit and report in 2021.  I believe the losses of remaining females Tina, and Shaunzi will follow, and as I stated in my two reports this pattern of losses at the Los Angeles Zoo foretells the future for Billy if he is not relocated to a higher level of care at the P.A.W.S. sanctuary in the San Andreas.
